TAT Lab Alumni Spotlight: 周杰意 Jiéyì Zhou

Jiéyì Zhou is a queer and transgender interdisciplinary artist who has shapeshifted through many mediums. With over 8 years of experience as a teaching artist, their current projects include managing Gay City: Seattle's LGBTQ+ Center's Media Arts Club, Youth Advocacy Media, Queer Peer Mentors, Youth Pride, Emerge Arts, and Youth Arts Programs.

Teaching Superpower: “Getting to know young people individually, understand their interests and motivations, and using that as a basis to adapt curriculum.”

“One of my classes that I'm most excited about is our Media Arts Club at Gay City: Seattle's LGBTQ+ Center,” writes Zhou. “Our young people are producing incredible work. One of my favorite things about this class is that we have the resources to pay all of our young people a stipend to learn and create art together, and at the end of the program we will be printing their artwork.”

Zhou’s current artwork is part of the Shunpike Storefronts program, showing at the Mercer Street tall window in South Lake Union June 21th - October 10th.

They also provide several guided video lessons for The Creative Advantage's series of Remote Arts Learning videos, featuring paper art projects and zines that are perfect for many ages.
