Hannah Viano is an artist and educator based in the Methow Valley, Washington who blends art and natural history to encourage students to reflect on nature and science in innovative ways.
“I see arts education as this excellent and crucial vehicle for launching out into directions of self-discovery, reflection, and connections with the natural environment and wider world…” writes Viano. “There is something about handwork, taking information in through our brains and out onto the page through our hands that deepens that connection immensely.”
Viano has worked in many school classrooms, as well as organizations including Methow Arts, Northwest Maritime Center, and Outward Bound. Viano seeks out projects that give her the opportunity to illustrate important ecological stories, to compellingly depict subjects and ideas, and use education to foster stewardship and a sense of place. This work comes to life through children’s books, teaching residencies, science outreach, cross- pollinator expeditions, and community focused public art projects. Hannah is also the host and facilitator of the Singla Creative Residency on Arnøya Island, Norway.
